Rug Cleaning in Winter Park

Collection and delivery in Winter Park are included. We take the rug back to the workshop, wash it properly, and bring it home.

The Houses

What Winter Park is built from

A city in its own right since 1887, laid out by northern founders around a chain of lakes joined by navigable canals, with Rollins College on Lake Virginia. Brick streets under old live oak, 1920s Mediterranean and Colonial Revival houses, mid-century ranches, lakefront houses on Lake Osceola and Lake Maitland, and a steady run of full rebuilds on the same lots. Hardwood, terrazzo and tile downstairs, with area rugs laid over them.

Long-tenured families, university households, and people who moved down from somewhere colder and brought the furniture with them. This is where the good rugs are — hand-knotted pieces bought decades ago, inherited, or shipped down from a northern house and never reassessed since.

What We Find Here

The Winter Park problem

The lakes here are fresh water rather than salt, and that changes what a rug is actually up against. A chain of lakes and the canals between them sit right against the houses, and the air over open water is loaded through the whole wet season, so a boathouse door, a screened porch and a lake-facing room all run several points wetter than the rest of the building. Wool takes up close to a third of its own weight in water before it feels damp to the hand, which means the pile reads dry while the cotton foundation underneath is carrying a load it never quite sheds between one afternoon storm and the next. The other half of the problem is light. These houses were built to look at the water, so the lake room is a wall of glass facing a surface that reflects as well as illuminates, and madder red and indigo go first — a bleached band along one edge of a rug that is otherwise perfectly sound. That part is irreversible, and it is the thing we are asked to fix most often and cannot.

If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
